Question: My application for SSDI or SSI disability benefits was denied. What do I do now?

Answer: Your choices now are to 1) appeal, 2) re-apply, or 3) give up. (HINT: we advise most claimants to APPEAL.)

When these reasons are given for denying a claim, consider appealing:

  • Based on your age and your education, you can do some types of work.
  • Your condition is expected to improve.
  • You failed to return forms or we could not reach you.

No matter why you were denied, talk to your disability attorney to see what they recommend.

Many applications for benefits are denied. If you reapply right away, expect another denial. The more times you apply, the more likely Social Security will deny your newest application without even taking a close look. It isn’t fair, but we see it a lot.

If your application is denied and you appeal, this is called a “Request for Reconsideration.” You can request your reconsideration online here or ask your disability attorney to do so for you.
