Question: Is there any way to speed up this process? Is my case an “exception?”

Answer: Maybe. Nearly everyone who applies for disability is in a very difficult financial and/or medical situation. Therefore, Social Security only expedites the process for those who are in truly dire situations.

If one of the following situations applies, you should alert Social Security and request that they expedite the handling of your claim.

  • Compassionate Allowances: if your medical condition is listed on the Compassionate Allowance list and your condition meets the criteria described. You can search the list here.
  • Homelessness: If you are homeless or facing homelessness. If you receive an eviction letter from your landlord, this can sometimes be used as evidence of impending homelessness.
  • Terminal: If your medical diagnoses is terminal.
  • Military: Some military veterans can have their cases expedited. You can find out more about veteran cases, here.
  • Other dire need situations may qualify for expedited processing. Ask your attorney whether your situation would be considered “dire need” by Social Security.

Please keep in mind, “expedited” does not mean “fast.” There is no “fast” when you are dealing with the Social Security Administration!
