Could it be depression?

Everyone, disabled or not, struggles with negative thoughts or feelings that come and go. But, when someone is depressed, the emptiness and sadness may seem unrelenting.

According to the American Psychiatric Association,* symptoms of clinical depression last at least two weeks or more and can include the following:

  • Feeling sad or having a depressed mood
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite
  • Trouble sleeping or sleeping too much
  • Loss of energy or increased fatigue
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity or slowed movements and speech
  • Feeling worthless or guilty
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Thoughts of death or suicide

Please don’t underestimate the effect that depression and anxiety can have on your life (and on your claim for benefits.) Many people are afraid to admit that they suffer from these conditions. However, it is very common for people suffering from almost any chronic impairment to also experience some depression and/or anxiety. Talk to your doctor about this.
