Some important changes are coming to Social Security and the way they deal with fraud allegations.

I am not an alarmist, but these changes could prove to be devastating to a lot of folks.

The good news is SSA will probably stop some acts of fraud.

The bad news is that many legitimately disabled claimants will get caught up in the crossfire.

We are revising the evidentiary standard for fraud and similar fault from a “preponderance of the evidence” to “reason to believe”…

“Reason to believe” is a much lower standard to meet than “preponderance of the evidence.”

This is going to screw over a lot of truly disabled claimants. This standard of proof is so low that many innocent people will lose their benefits if someone decides to report them for fraud. Ever had an angry neighbor or spiteful relative try to stir up trouble? It happens, and we are going to see the fallout.

You need to understand how to protect yourself and your benefits.

If you are disabled, or heading in that direction, it is more important than ever that you go to the doctor. Get your treatment. Follow up with specialists. Your medical records need to be absolutely rock solid.

If you are still going through the application/appeals process, please get an attorney to help you. An attorney cannot keep you from being investigated, but they can help you make sure your case is as strong as possible.
