No one actually WANTS to talk to a lawyer.

I promise, your lawyer and their staff are not just bugging you because they have nothing better to do. If you’ve hired an attorney to help, let them do their job.

If you feel like your disability lawyer or their staff calls you more often than you’d like, count yourself fortunate! LACK OF COMMUNICATION is the main complaint that clients have about their attorneys. Many new clients come to us from other firms because they could not get updates on their cases, or they were frustrated by an overall lack of communication.

What should you do?

  1. When your attorney’s office calls, answer the phone. Or, call them back. When they ask you questions or send you forms, respond to them.
  2. When Social Security asks you questions or sends you forms, respond to Social Security AND let your attorney know.
  3. When something new comes up, or something changes, let your lawyer know.

Report these changes to your disability lawyer:

  • Contact info: move or change your phone number.
  • Family: get married, divorced, change your name, have a baby, or adopt a child.
  • Work: start or stop working, or have other changes to your employment.
  • Education: start or stop going to school, job training, apprenticeship, or any other type of education.
  • Emergencies: medical emergency, being evicted from your home.
  • Medical Care: brand new symptoms, new diagnoses, changing doctors, or referral to a new specialist.
  • Legal Trouble: bankruptcy, arrested, on probation or parole.
  • Anything else that may impact your disability claim or your attorney’s ability to help in your case.

If you have other questions about communication between you and the firm that represents you, do not be afraid to ask them.
